REVIEW:
With the Weber Q220 Gas Grill you don’t have to worry about sacrificing quality for portability. The Q220 is a master of design with a high quality porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate. The grill is top notch quality that packs up to be less than 32 inches, but it can still cook a whole chicken thanks to the seven inch lid. The Q220 is basically an upgrade from the highly rated Weber Q200, so quite a bit of the information in this review can also be found in our review of the Q200. Main differences are the taller lid so that you can fit a whole chicken, built-in thermometer for easy temperature readings and electronic ignition for even easier start up. Customer feedback (reviews) on the Q220 is also slightly different than that of the Q200 with some useful tips being added.
This is a rather lengthy review. If you would like to purchase the Weber Q220 Grill without reading the review then please just click on the buy button at the top of the review. The grate is what really makes this grill so fantastic and as mentioned in the opening paragraph it’s absolutely top quality. It weights in at a good 25+ lbs and provides smokin hot and even heat distribution – no hot or cold spots. Another clever little feature is the fold away side trays that are extremely useful (to rest your beer of course and maybe some grilling tools). The Weber Q220 works great in the backyard for everyday cooking and doubles as an awesome picnic or beach grill. When taking the grill on a outing the fold out plates are especially handy to rest your grilling accessories. Just remember while the grill is portable it still weights in about 40 lbs thanks to the heavy, but high quality grate. One person can carry the grill, but not for too far and it’s probably just better and easier if someone gives you a hand.
Preheat the Weber Q220 for about 10 minutes and you’ll be ready to cook up a storm. Once preheated, the medium gas setting is normally plenty to cook with – it all just depends what delicious meal you’re busy cooking. There have however been some reviews stating that the grill can be ready in as short as 3 minutes if preheated at full blast. Either way, with 280 inches of real cooking space you are guaranteed a decent sized cooking surface with excellent heat distribution where you can cook anything from steaks, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, pork chops, onion slices and more. Even breakfast – just purchase the griddle to place over the grate and you’re ready to go.
The grill operates on 14.1 or 16.4 oz propane cylinders (neither of which are included) that will only last for a few grill sessions – each canister lasts anything from 1.5 – 2.5 hours depending on your heat settings. Although the canisters are small and don’t last all that long, their size greatly increases portability. Just make sure to have a few spare canisters lying around to avoid embarrassing moments. These canisters can be found at Walmart or most hardware stores. If you do grill on a very regular basis, it’s probably worth purchasing a universal adapter for a 20 lb tank.
Cleaning the grill is not too difficult at all. Heat up your grill as hot as possible and it pretty much becomes self cleaning. Once cooled the grate can be scraped with a bronze-bristle brush. The grate can also easily be removed (once cooled of course) and cleaned with some hot soapy water (mild dish washing liquid) and a bit of scrubbing if you wish to. This type of cleaning (burn-off / soapy water) will however require the grate to be seasoned again. The drip pan is easily accessible at the bottom of the grill itself – where all the drippings collect.
The Weber Q220 Gas Grill is perfect for anyone who requires:
- A grill to use on a small patio or terrace (but looks just as good in the backyard – just add the stationary cart)
- A good value for money portable grill (Weber is synonymous with Grilling and Quality).
- A portable grill for tail-gating
- A compact grill that isn’t too small.
- Convenience

CONS:
Any product review unfortunately does have some cons and the Weber Q220 is no different. We have also included complaints about the Q200 here as it’s ultimately very much the same grill. The good news is that less than 1/10 customers did not like the Q200 and even fewer complaints were found about the Q220. Complaints ranged from regulator problems to shipping damages. There were also the odd complaint about the side shelves not being that strong and unable to hold a plate of burgers for example. The answer to this complaint is that the side tables are there for accessories – like your grilling tools or another cold beer. Not for heavy-ish items like a plate of 15 burgers. These complaints are however few and far between. Weber customer service is top notch and they have received very high ratings from customers for dealing with complaints such as broken parts and regulator issues, so just get in contact with them on the off chance that you maybe experience some problems. One other small drawback is that indirect cooking is not possible. Should you wish to do some indirect cooking the Weber Q300 or Q320 is what you’re looking for.
CONCLUSION:
The Weber Q220 is perfect if you are looking for a portable grill – whether it’s because of space limitations or maybe you just don’t want a mammoth grill big enough to cook for a whole army. The Q220 can easily grill for 4-6 people, has great heat distribution and control, cooks well, is easy to assemble and has quite a few additional and clever features that come in very handy. It might be a bit more expensive than the cheaper imports, but it’s definitely worth every penny and of course it’s a Weber which means quality, durability and reliability. Overall the Weber Q220 Grill is exactly what one expects from Weber – great value for money. The Q220 Grill is highly recommended if you are in the market for a portable or smaller type grill and with more than 9/10 customer reviews giving this grill 4 to 5 stars you can’t go wrong. If you are in the market for this type of grill and not looking for a large grill, then look no further. The Weber Q220 is just what you’ve been searching for.
